September has been an eventful month as far as the The Busanga Pride is concerned and the camp was off to a good start. The pride was sighted hunting on numerous incidents as well as indulging in a few attempts in procreation when one of the prides’ males and a female were seen mating south of Shumba Camp. They were also seen one afternoon, after having had a relaxing day, swimming across the channel by Hippo Pools! An extraordinary sight and a first for most people who saw it.
One of the highlights this month at Busanga Bush Camp was the early morning wakeup call from the pride one morning. The camp was awoken by the frantic barking of a bushbuck in camp, soon after which the pride came charging through the camp heading north, one of the males stopping by the management house to let out a bellowing roar. Once the coast was clear and everyone felt safe, all emerged and found the tracks all over the camp; the pride had obviously had a good look around!
Unfortunately, as the month has progressed, things have not been looking too good for the Busanga Pride. The young, sub-adult male, was driven out of the pride and had to fend for himself, not being very successful. On a few occasions when he was seen, he was looking very thin and trying to get by on small morsels such as monitor lizards. However, later during the month he was seen back with the pride and they seemed to have accepted him again, evident good news. Sadly however, the end of the month arrived and he has not been seen for a few days, so fingers are crossed for the moment. Another unfortunate incident was that one of the pride lionesses was seen with a terrible puncture wound on one of her hind legs. At first it looked quite badly infected and she was experiencing problems keeping up with the rest of the pride so, again, hopes were not high for her survival, however, she was seen a few days after that and the wound seemed to have been cleaned by a fellow member of the pride and she was looking healthy.
